Pros and cons of creating class and function components in React vs Vue vs Svelte.

For a period of time, most of the mainstream frontend frameworks have converged on a class-or-semi-class-based model for declaring components. However, in the past year, we are seeing some new ideas emerging regarding how stateful logic inside components are declared, managed and composed.

Evan examines three different approaches: React Hooks, Vue Composition API, and Svelte 3. They share a common departure from the class-based models, but also have fundamental differences due to the trade-offs in their respective designs, which he discusses in this talk.

As the author of Vue, I often get asked on how the major JavaScript frameworks today differ from one another. Typically people expect technical details: size, performance, ecosystem... but to me, what fundamentally differentiates frameworks from one another is where a framework lands on the primitives vs. conventions spectrum. This is usually a conscious design decision, and the major frameworks we see today manifests three different segments of this spectrum. 

In this talk I'll discuss how these design choices have affected the adoption and growth of these frameworks, and why there might not be one single optimal balance point.

With the rise of modern JavaScript build toolchains such as Babel, webpack and PostCSS, compilation has become an indispensable step in building JavaScript applications. This compilation step, in addition to providing access to new language features, also provides the opportunity for performance optimizations. Minification is one such example, but there are many more possibilities. This talk will explore some existing ideas in the category of build-time optimizations, introduce related work in the Vue ecosystem, and discuss some ideas for future experimentation.
