Transforming GraphQL: Full Stack Infrastructure as Code

What happens when we take the advancements of GraphQL and combine them with a mental model that all data should be local and offline first, with eventual consistency to your database as a second thought? 

Complexity, and the consistent attempts to reduce complexity, are at the core of the evolution of technology. As technology evolves, we then find harder problems to solve and are presented with new challenges. In the client space, we’ve seen innovation that has addressed how we deal with modern application concerns like real-time and offline data while at the same time GraphQL has continued to gain in market share.

What happens when we take the advancements that GraphQL has introduced as a paradigm and combine them with a mental model that all data should be local and offline first, with eventual consistency to your database as a second thought? 

In this talk, I’ll talk about a data store paradigm that allows developers to work with a single, local database and source of truth, and the idea that you should not have to make more than one write action to have (eventual) consistency across the client and server.

Real-time & Offline-ready Serverless GraphQL with AppSync

Building your own real-world, secure & scalable GraphQL API is a lot of work. With AppSync, robust GraphQL APIs including schema, resolvers, and data sources are created & configured automatically and instantly through either the AWS Amplify CLI or the AppSync console, abstracting away much of the complexity traditionally involved with setting up a new GraphQL backend.

In this talk, I’ll demonstrate and discuss the more interesting and powerful functionality that AppSync offers and do so in a way that developers will walk away with a confident understanding of how AppSync works and can be extended to help them in their day to day.

We’ll also create a real AppSync API & connect to a React application in a demo to demonstrate what we discussed in the talk in a live coding exercise, showing how to create queries, mutations & subscriptions directly from a client-side application.

Full Stack Development in the Era of Serverless Computing

As GraphQL moves into the mainstream, the tooling & ecosystem has grown and has made it possible to do much more with GraphQL than using it as just a data layer. In this talk, I’ll show how developers are using GraphQL as an API gateway to accomplish things that you may have never thought possible.

When we think of GraphQL at the resolver level, we typically associate some type of database as the resolver data source, but in practice a resolver is simply a function. What this means is that we can do much more with our GraphQL APIs & our resolvers than we ever thought possible, including things like taking existing REST APIs & transforming them into GraphQL APIs (http resolvers), passing the query to Lambda or serverless functions for processing & returning the response via a GraphQL query (for things like AI & ML), geospatial & time-based queries (passing the query to Elasticsearch), & even VR & AR apps (passing in user location / app info & using the subscription to transmit image assets). 

In this talk, I’ll walk through what this looks like in theory & in practice, demoing 4 different applications that implement this functionality & showing the code that make the magic happen.

Hooking Up a Conference in Real-time with GraphQL

With the emergence of more & more powerful & sophisticated managed services like Algolia, AWS AppSync, Cloudinary, Auth0, Amazon Rekognition & Firebase it's now completely possible for front-end engineers to build full-stack web & mobile applications while with almost no back-end code, relying on these services to do the heavy lifting for features like data layers, search, authentication, & authorization & using serverless glue functions to handle what’s left.

In this talk, I'll talk about this philosophy in depth, discuss the options available from different service providers, & then show how (live-code) to build a full-stack React Native application in just a few minutes by using React & AWS Amplify React Native to quickly build a real-world app complete with a GraphQL API, analytics, search, authentication & authorization.

The React ecosystem has given developers the opportunity to target platforms that were once thought out of reach for JavaScript developers. 

Now, the Viro platform opens the door to developing both AR & VR on both iOS & Android as well as GEAR VR and Google Daydream. 

In this talk, I will quickly go over how to get up and running with the framework and demo an app that allows user to upload images from the conference into a virtual room, as well as walk around and interact with them in Augmented Reality.

React Native was originally built to target only iOS and Android operating systems, but as popularity of react as well as the reactive paradigm grew in popularity and opened other doors to other platforms, projects such as React Primitives and React Native Web began to take shape. We are now also seeing other paradigms in the same space such as ReactXP, Weex, and Flutter begin to take shape. 

We will dive into each of these platforms and discuss how they work, what their APIs look like, how they differ from the traditional React Native platform, and how the future of cross platform development is evolving.
